Our History

February 1993

MPI Was Born

Known then as Midwest Patrol and Investigative, Shawn Smith Sr. founded MPI to fill his vision of a professional security organization. Shawn Sr used his 17 years of law enforcement experience, and the leadership gained acting as Chief of Police to propel MPI into today’s successful organization.

Brand Update

We began eyeing Texas as a second home for our MPI family. As we ventured down south, we understood the ‘Midwest’ to our Midwest Patrol and Investigative likely wouldn’t be welcomed with open arms in Texas. Midwest Patrol and Investigative became better known as MPI Protective in Wisconsin and MPI Protective Service Corporation in Texas. Most often, we warmly refer to each facet of our family business as, simply, MPI.

Mentorship

Appropriately named Shawn Jr., the firstborn son of MPI’s founder and longtime CEO Shawn Sr, moves down to Fort Worth, TX. Familiarizing himself with the ins and outs of MPI Texas, Shawn Jr works closely with the MPI National Training Director, Pete Hetrick. Junior experiences firsthand the intensity of training MPI provides, from both a student and instructor perspective at Pete’s side.

Death of Chief, Shawn Smith, Sr.

Chief, Shawn Smith Sr. lost his fight with 9/11 exposure-related cancer.

Shawn Smith Jr., the firstborn son of founder Shawn Smith Sr became the second company CEO. Taking the lead amid grief and a global pandemic, Shawn Jr. navigated MPI to an impressively fit year, further proving his ability to carry and build upon the legacy handed to him. We, as a family, are eager to watch as he continues to demonstrate his prowess as a leader and take MPI to new heights–making Chief proud.

Today we carry on our family-owned and operated legacy with our CEO Shawn Smith Jr. bookended by sisters Anna and Kathleen Smith. MPI continues to drive forward—proudly representing the next generation of private security while modeling each value that got us here. With an ambitious blue-collar, die-hard small business owner for a father, one could definitely argue that we were bred for this. We believe we were born for this.

MPI pumps through our veins along with the mission it represents, fueling us with more determination and confidence than ever to bring the MPI legacy to new heights.
